► How do you measure bone strength? There is no proactive approach or routine procedure for testing for osteoporosis or osteopenia.
Typically, a patient would only obtain an insight into their bone density if triggered by a fracture. If someone fractures easily, this is an obvious sign. Otherwise, you would only know from scans or tests. The DEXA scan is the most common bone density scan used in the UK.
We cannot feel our bones weakening – it does not hurt – but there are plenty of things we can do to keep our bones strong.
► How can we improve bone health from a young age? Children and adolescents need to be active and ingest calcium. This is very important, as hormones and development are key for future bone health. When we get older, the toxins we can absorb through smoking or alcohol consumption harm bone health, as do conditions like eating disorders.
