“The physiology around running and cycling is similar, which is why runners or cyclists can become great triathletes. There are differences in the muscle activation patterns, the nature of the muscle contractions and the joint ranges of motion, but as long as you make easy changes to the bike position and ensure that running forms the majority of your training, any negative adaptations can be minimised.
Cycling is a great way to develop aspects of running-specific physiology while increasing mileage at a rate that allows the joints and connective tissue time to adapt. Cycling is used by high-level runners to help maintain large training volumes while minimising the stress and load due to the large ground reaction forces created when running.
