It’s better to be overweight but exercising than normal bodyweight and not exercising
I need to lose weight before I can run.” It’s a phrase I’ve heard many times, especially when I was a personal trainer trying to help clients start running.
I know how effective running can be for weight loss, so I would encourage new clients to start a walk/run programme to get in shape, but I would often be met with resistance. “Once I’ve lost a few pounds I’ll be able to run,” was a typical response. It’s like saying you need to get fit to go to the gym, rather than realising going to the gym will get you fit!
Fortunately, it’s not true. Anyone can run – it doesn’t matter whether you’re overweight, unfit or older. The only barrier to running (provided you’ve got a clean bill of health) is your mindset.
