Backpacks and hydration packs can be a bit divisive: many runners prefer holding a bottle of water or, in fact, not carrying anything at all, sticking to hydration before and aft er a run. However, for those of us who enjoy a longer run, a hydration pack should be top of your list of must-haves if there isn’t one in your wardrobe already. And for those of us who are looking forward to getting back to racing this year, there’s a distinct possibility that when races do come back, a lot more of them are going to be self-supporting - and that means we’ll need to take our own water with us.
If you find you’ve signed up for a race which will not provide water stations along the route, you need to make sure you practise running with a hydration pack beforehand. Good ones fit well but it’s still worth getting used to the feeling of running in one. Decathlon does a range of backpacks from 5L upwards, all equipped with a hydration pack that slots into the back. The 5L one is great for shorter runs, but as soon as you’re heading out for over an hour and as the weather gets warmer, the 10L version is the one to go for.
That 10-litre storage means you get useful pockets galore: there’s a big zipped back pocket with plenty of space for extra layers and spare socks, as well as four small pockets on the chest to stash gels, flapjacks, your phone, and any other little bits you like to take running with you. There’s also room to pop a small soft flask in one of these if you need more hydration capacity. There are smaller pockets on the sides that are perfect for tissues and for tucking away your gel wrappers and other rubbish if there aren’t any bins around.
