QMy joints and muscles ache constantly at the moment and it’s making exercise really hard. I’m 40 but I feel 90. Should I see my doctor?
A IT's normal to become less flexible and AIt’s stiffer with age. There is less water in body tissues, fewer lubricating fluids in joints and less elasticity in muscles and tendons. Oestrogen has a direct effect on our skeletal tissues, too, and the fluctuating and reducing levels of oestrogen during perimenopause can cause stiffness and aching in muscles and joints. You may think 40 is too early to be thinking about the menopause but symptoms can start up to 10 years before your periods finally stop.
|| Even if you have to adapt what you do and reduce intensity and frequency, it’s still very to stay active||
Not all women beginning perimenopause need to go to their doctor. It really depends on how you feel and whether your symptoms are important interfering with your daily life. If they are, see your GP to discuss whether hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is suitable for you. HRT can help to control and reduce lots of perimenopausal symptoms but there’s no guarantee that it will reduce joint and muscle pain.
Menopause occurs when you haven’t had a period for 12 months. The average age for this in the UK is 51. Women who are younger than 45 at menopause are advised to see their doctor. HRT is usually prescribed (if there are no contra-indications) until the average age of menopause at which point women can decide whether to continue taking it or not.
