Cheese lovers, listen up! A new study has found that eating cheese does not raise the risk of heart attack or stroke. Published in the European Journal of Epidemiology, findings revealed that 10g of cheese per day was not linked with a risk of death or coronary heart disease, and 20g per day of fermented dairy intake (cheese, yoghurt and soured milk products) was even linked with a 2% reduced risk of death and cardiovascular disease (although in a sensitivity analysis there was no longer a significant link). While dairy products are high in saturated fat which, when consumed in large amounts, can increase blood cholesterol, they are high in protein and calcium – important to our diets. Stick to 20g of saturated fat per day to keep your intake in check.
