Q I’m pregnant with my first child and can’t wait to get back to running but have heard it can affect your breast milk. Is this true, and what can I do about it?
A You can certainly get back to running while you’re at the breastfeeding stage but don’t rush into it: give your body a chance to recover before doing highintensity exercise. The amount of milk you produce and its composition will not be affected by running, no matter how much you run. However, we do know that dehydration can cause problems, so make sure you drink enough water before, during and aft er your run. Contrary to popular belief, exercise doesn’t affect the taste of breast milk, so your baby won’t reject it; for your own comfort you may want to use a breast pump, or feed your baby before running, and wear a bra that provides plenty of support.
