IMPACT OF PREGNANCY ON RUNNERS
In arecent report tracking elite athletes, published in the Medicine & Science in Sports Exercise Journal, those who returned to high-level competition post pregnancy tended to return to a similar level of performance as before. And an incredible 46 per cent of these athletes actually improved their performance post pregnancy. Yes, they got faster than they were before they were pregnant!
Pregnancy, birth and recovery may mean you have to slow down and adapt for a while, but this study – the first of its kind to actually investigate performance outcomes before and after pregnancy – reveals that it’s possible to return to and even surpass your pre-pregnancy performance level. Knowing that having a baby doesn’t have to mean the end of your goals or your performance, could herald the beginning of an exciting era, one where you let go of junk miles, run fewer sessions that have greater impact, race less but achieve more and allow your priorities to shift away from stressing over every mile, session or timed interval. You may choose to invest in strength and flexibility work and reap the rewards. This era may be one where all athletes, whatever their level, and coaches, can look upon childbirth as a positive part of your training journey.
