POST-RACE BLUES
Our annoyingly cheerful ultrarunner Damian Hall is trying to cope with life after the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc
TOKEN BLOKE
Damian gazes wistfully at the Alps, trying to look all deep and meaningful
Breaking into the top 10 at UTMB was a fouryear obsession and it’s taken me a while to come back down to Earth. The goodwill I’ve received both in person in Chamonix and online afterwards has been overwhelming. I’ve bored listeners on more running podcasts than I knew existed. My coaching clients have doubled. My social media following has doubled. I’m grateful for every bit of it. It feels like the sacrifices I made were worth it after all.
At UTMB I was trying to compete with full-time athletes, so I tried to live and train like one for a spell, despite having a family and having to support that family. And that took sacrifices. I’ve missed two weddings (a friend since school and my cousin’s) for UTMB. I missed my dad’s 70th birthday earlier this year for a key race.
