This race offers plenty of ups and perfectly timed downs, over the North Downs way. It has gorgeous scenery, varied terrain – road, paths, mud, sand, fields and woods; and a lovely, friendly atmosphere.
Sure, some things were missing from previous years: the brass band playing us in at the finish line, the gorgeous homemade cakes and the epic queue for the toilets. But this glorious race, organised by Farnham Rotary Club, was well run and Covid safe.
Runners were set offin groups of eight at five-minute intervals, masked up until the gun went off, and having had our temperature taken prior to the start. We were cautioned to take care passing, to wear our masks at the water stations and when overtaking, and to watch out for roots, stones, stinging nettles and other hazards. Although you could run this one in road shoes, trail shoes offer more feedback on the uneven surfaces. Running, I was mostly alone – I overestimated how long it would take to finish, soon broke away from my ‘pack’, and only passed 12 people over the 13.1 miles.
|| Even with the Covid restrictions, there were plenty of marshals, water stops and a well-marked route ||
