Start gradually with the amount of weight you load onto your bar, and make sure you form stays strong
What is it? Almost all commercial gyms now have Olympic Lifting Platforms. Although they are useful and versatile bits of kit, unfortunately for many gym goers – especially women – they can be the most intimidating too. An Olympic Lifting Platform is similar to a regular squat rack, with the main difference being that it’ll have a slick wood floor surrounded by rubber, designed specifically so that barbells will bounce when they’re dropped after an Olympic Lift.
What’s it used for? Despite the name, Olympic Lifting Platforms can be used for a lot of exercises other than just the lifting. The two Olympic Lifts are the Clean & Jerk and the Snatch. These two complex moves take a lot of practice and dedication and won’t necessarily benefit you as a runner. However, you can use the Olympic Lifting Platforms to perform compound movements such as squats and deadlifts which should definitely form part of your strength and conditioning training. Even if your gym has a separate rack for squats, this is by far the best place for deadlifts.
Why is it intimidating? Olympic Lifting Platforms will often be used by advanced exercisers lifting huge amounts of weight and doing complex lifts, which can leave you feeling like you have no place using them. Olympic Lifting Platforms are often in a very exposed part of the gym, meaning you might feel like everyone is looking at you while you’re using it, but don’t worry, they’re far too busy looking at themselves to notice what you’re doing.
