Sophie Power wants to improve equality on the world’s start lines

Sophie Power has become one of the loudest voices championing women who are continuing their sporting careers throughout motherhood. Sophie, who was a Women’s Running Warrior back in 2020, has been an ultrarunner for over 10 years, and has recently represented Great Britain in the 24hr World Championships – coming in 19th overall, and first Brit. After a picture of her breastfeeding at the 2018 UTMB went viral, she has used her platform to make a positive impact on women in sport.
In 2014, Sophie lost her place in the UTMB when pregnant with her first child. Back then, the race didn’t allow pregnant athletes to defer their place, so this left her with little choice but to run in 2016, just three months after giving birth again. She knew if she didn’t run, she’d lose her place.
Since 2018, Sophie has campaigned for races to allow women to defer their places until they have fully recovered from pregnancy and childbirth. The races include the London Marathon, which now allows pregnant and postpartum women with Good for Age or Championship places to defer their entry.
