“I’d been feeling very tired, but I was training for a half Ironman and marathon, so I presumed it was just related to training.However, there were times I couldn’t even make it up the stairs in my house.I had a routine check with my doctor and blood tests revealed severe iron-deficiency anaemia.
“My periods had always been heavy, but they were becoming a real problem. I had to change every 30 minutes to an hour, had accidents and passed huge clots. It was really impacting all parts of my life for a week each month, and was the root cause of my anaemia.
“As my iron levels were so low, I had to have large doses of iron supplements. After consultation with my gynaecologist, we decided an endometrial ablation (a procedure where the uterus lining is removed) would be the best option to treat my heavy periods. It took a few months, but eventually my iron levels started to improve. I also saw a dietitian, who recommended some changes in my diet and I started eating beef three times a week.
“I took the advice of my doctors and listened to my body, and stopped all exercise while I got myself healthy again It was hard to give up my place in the New York City Marathon, but it was necessary.
