One of my favourite races has to be the Coledale Horseshoe Fell Race, advertised as an AM-level fell race. Fell races are graded from A-C with A being the more difficult and the M standing for medium distance. M means the race will be over 10K but less than 20K.
With a distance of 13.7K and 915m/ 3,002ft of climbing, the course has a real kick to it, starting with a climb from the valley straight up Grisedale Pike (791m). The first climb always leaves me thinking: “Why am I here?!”, and “I’m never doing this race again!” but then, once I reach the top, the feeling of relief and the endorphins kick in.
Held in March or April, the weather has always seemed unseasonably warm and sunny. One year, there was still snow on the top of the mountains, but we were still able to run in vests and shorts happily. In good weather, after Grisedale Pike, the route stretches out before you and you can watch the front runners hitting Crag Hill and descending down the other side.
