I took up running in 2010 after my mum passed away from a heart attack. I now run to keep fit and enjoy the challenges that come with running – not least that I am visually impaired and have to navigate myself around various obstacles as I run.
My opticians noticed my vision had deteriorated and I was rushed to Southampton Hospital with detached retinas, age 22. My right eye was operated on first and then my left eye went six weeks later.
This means that I have lost central vision in my right eye and can’t see anything out of my left eye. I wear contact lenses in my right eye and glasses at weekends. One theory is that my sight loss was a result of being born prematurely.
