Alexandra Goldstraw, who coaches women through the Coach to 5K plan with her running group,She Runs Lincolnshire, says the plan needs to be adapted for those who already have some base fitness.
“I dislike the term Couch to 5K as it insinuates anyone who hasn’t run before has just sat on their backside!”she laughs.Sharon agrees.“The schedule doesn’t progress quickly enough for beginners who have a good level of aerobic fitness from participating in other sports. At my club,we write a shorter plan for these people.”
You might also find that you need to adapt the plan if you have missed some of the runs due to illness, life commitments or a niggle, rather than picking up where you left off. It’s easy enough to do this, says James.“If you miss a week or two, your body may have de-conditioned slightly,so it may be wise to start at the previous completed week to ease yourself back,”he recommends.
