The iliopsoas is a group of three muscles, the psoas major and minor and the iliacus, together forming your main hip flexor muscle. They are oft en overlooked, but this group of muscles is vital to running
Anatomy
The psoas muscles arise from the surface of the vertebrae and discs within the abdomen. The Iliacus arises from the iliac fossa – the inner surface – of the pelvis. They join together at the level of the inguinal ligament, in the groin, cross in front of the hip joint and insert into the lesser trochanter of the femur, which lies below the hip joint. It therefore passes in front of, and separate to, the hip joint. It receives its nerve supply from the first, second and third lumbar vertebral nerve roots.
