With the climate crisis making shocking headlines on a daily basis and the prospect of a planet that’s reaching breaking point, there’s been a huge shift in the number of us looking to make better choices and live a more sustainable lifestyle.
Your fitness routine plays a part in your lifestyle changes; running outdoors helps you foster and enjoy a relationship with the natural world, reminding you of the fragility of the planet we need to protect. You might have swapped your daily commute for a run to work, or perhaps you leave the car at home when you can and walk everywhere instead. Maybe you’ve made a commitment to only buy sustainable run kit or you wear pieces until they come to the end of their life before buying new.
Your diet also provides an opportunity for action. There are now around 79 million vegans worldwide, and the vegan boom is set to grow. A 2018 analysis by researchers at the University of Oxford into the effects of farming on the planet found that avoiding meat and dairy was the single biggest way to reduce our carbon footprint. “An animal-product-free diet is a kinder one. Also, a vegan diet avoids the associated environmental damage that comes with raising animals for food. This includes the animals themselves producing gases, the transport of them and then the meat product. On a personal level, studies have also shown that there is less of a risk of heart disease with less red meat consumption,” summarises personal trainer and nutritionist Chloe Bowler.
