HOW I TRAIN
Jess Judd
Jess Judd, a HOKA elite athlete, qualified for both the 5,000m and 10,000m in the Tokyo Olympics, while studying for her PhD at the same time
Running runs in the family for Jess, who was initially inspired to run by her father
What’s the hardest race you’ve done? The 10K in Tokyo. The conditions were just so tough, and the pace was quick from the start, so it was difficult in so many ways. I have never been as tired at the end of a race as I was that day.
What session do you love doing the most? Summer sessions, where the pace gets quicker, and the mileage drops. It’s a great time of year where you start to feel like the season is really getting going. My favourite session would be something like 6x500m, because it’s speedy and reminds me of the sessions I used to do when I was more of a 1,500m runner. However, the strength I have gained from the 10K and 5K training helps me attack it in a different way than I used to.
