TAKE YOUR CUE FROM SCANDINAVIA AND GET OFF THE BEATEN TRACK FOR A RUNNING BOOST, SAYS LOUISE PYNE
OFF-ROAD ADVENTURES
The Dorset coast is an irresistibly inviting location for a spot of friluftsliv
Connecting with nature can of course mean getting unrecognisably muddy
There’s probably no better time to rev up your fitness routine than in summer. The sun rises earlier and the evenings are longer, the days are warmer and fresh air is beckoning. In Scandinavian culture, the concept of appreciating the outdoors has even been given a name.
Friluftsliv (pronounced fri-loofts-live) is translated literally as ‘free air life’. It’s a notion that’s deeply rooted in Nordic, Swedish and Danish values, where exploring and interacting with nature is a huge part of the everyday lifestyle. Whatever the time of year, you’ll find locals celebrating the great outdoors, whether it’s camping in a forest, taking a dip in a beautifully clear lake or hiking up a mountain. And now the sun is finally shining in the UK, it’s the perfect time to lace up your trainers and get the most out of the great outdoors, too.
