PORTUGAL IN THE SPRINGTIME
SUN, WARMTH AND BLUE SKIES? THINGS DIDN’T QUITE GO ACCORDING TO PLAN FOR RACHAEL WOOLSTON, WHEN SHE RAN THE EDP LISBON HALF MARATHON…
EDP LISBON HALF MARATHON
When you run in spring in the UK, you expect the weather to be chilly, windy and potentially raining. Which is why I travelled overseas to Lisbon for a spot of warm weather racing. Which isn’t quite what I got.
In fact, as I sheltered from a torrential downpour in the metro station near the start line of the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon, I realised it had caught most of the local runners out too, as they were hastily wrapping head scarves that were being handed out around their legs.
I’d spent the week scanning the forecast and, for once, my app had been accurate. It meant that the day before the event, the race organisers had been forced to move the start line off the 25 de Abril Bridge, due to dangerously high winds. This is why I found myself huddling in a metro stop, rather than standing on the iconic Lisbon landmark, which is famous for being modelled on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. For many run tourists, this is one of the draws of the event. But I was simply thankful to have shelter from the rain.
