PERSONAL BEST
It normally takes at least two weeks for your basic training adaptations to show, and up to six weeks for a measurable improvement, so if you make some of the following changes now, in four weeks’ time you could be nudging back into PB territory.
Even if you’ve been struggling to find your fitness mojo this year or had a spell out injured, pack in these tips and in a short time, you’ll be back on top of your game. With a strong base of fitness and a positive mindset, we believe you can do it!
STRENGTH TRAINING
Assuming you have a solid base level of conditioning, one way to see improved fitness in one month is to strength train the movements and muscles involved in running, with exercises such as lunges, box step-ups and rotation work for the core. “This can help joint alignment and control, meaning less wasted energy just to keep your body upright as you run”, says Paul Swainson, head of PT at Future Fit Training. “Done correctly, strength work can also reduce your injury risk.”
