How would our annoyingly cheerful ultrarunner, Damian Hall, get on at the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon?

Road marathons are a love-hate thing for me. I like the distance. I like how it’s the classic running challenge. I like the atmosphere and how inspiring it all is with so many people dressed as rhinos.
This may sound a bit wimpy, but I don’t like all that ouchy tarmac and all the cursed flatness. It’s the most brutal surface to run on and means joints and feet getting an incessant hammering (somehow I don’t take it nearly so personally when mountains bash me up). I don’t love running with my face glued to my Suunto either.
All that said, I can’t resist the allure of an occasional 26.2 miles. And at the age of 42, there’s a nagging feeling that I’m running out of time to bag a life-time best. So I was excited about running the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon, which I’d heard great things about, not least its PB potential.
