“ADVENTURE BEGINS AT THE END OF THE ROADS YOU KNOW”
I came across this quote when gathering ideas for the issue. For me, it sums up what adventure is about: stepping out of the familiar and out of your comfort zone. And, given I live above a shop on a busy street in east London, and run, on average, about eight miles a week, it quite literally defines the reality of adventure for me. I’d love to share stories with you of running in the Alps, or in a self-supported ultra across a hot and dusty desert somewhere but, in reality, my adventures are rather small-scale. They involve daring to venture down a new road on one of my evening runs; discovering new pockets of my local park; or heading out early in the morning and seeing where the street lights take me. It’s these ‘microadventures’ (head to Claire Chamberlain’s column for more on these, page 21) that, for me, keep running exciting and exhilarating (especially when I get lost!) and almost always leave me eager to discover what would happen if I ventured that wee bit further off the beaten track …
