Shareefa J calls for better representation of black people
The people, campaigns, research and updates making an impact in our running community this month
Recent global events have made us all realise that even though we want to live in a world where there are no barriers to women running, we are painfully aware that those barriers exist. We see ourselves as a sisterhood and we want to ensure that all your voices are heard. At Women’s Running, we have always wanted to be representative, and to support inclusivity, but we know that we can do more
Our Women’s Running warrior, Shareefa J, shared her views with us on discrimination, when Blackout Tuesday hit: “I think it’s really important that everyone talks about this situation. The more conversations we have, the more we will be able to move forward much faster. I think this time has created this space for us. People have never taken an interest before; we’ve had to fight for attention, but now people are coming to us.
“Less than a year ago, a retail brand told me they wouldn’t work with me unless I wore a straight wig. I want to expose people like this for discrimination. And that’s what we’ve been trying to do on our platform, shine4diversity, which I co-founded with Mahalia Handley. But until now, people haven’t wanted to pay attention.
