Complete steps 1-3 on the previous page, and then imagine you’re in the Control Room of your mind, the place that governs all your bodily functions and emotions – where there is a panel with many dials, each of which is labelled. Take your time deciding which dials need to be adjusted. If you’d like to feel more confident speaking to people during races or parkrun, turn down the volume on the dial labelled ‘anxiety’ and turn up the volume on the dial labelled ‘confidence’, and then spend some time imagining practical ways you can do that (by, for example, coming up with friendly things you can say such as ‘Isn’t it great to be back?’ or having a mantra you can repeat to yourself such as ‘Friends are only strangers you don’t know yet’). This technique can be used to make adjustments to self-belief (‘Yes, you can achieve that PB’) or anything else you’d like to change.
