Q I lose concentration when I run. What will help me to be more focused?
Q I’m training for my first marathon – can you give me some advice on what I should eat during the race?
A While running, you can choose to either associate or dissociate – with the former you focus on how your body is feeling (by, for example, noticing your breathing or how strong your legs are or how great it feels to be pumping your arms) and with the latter you focus on your external environment (a magnificent oak tree or brightly painted house). If you find yourself distracted by negative thoughts, bring them gently back to what you’ve chosen to focus on. It can also be helpful to view your run as a series of goals that you can tick off, aiming, for example, to reach the roundabout after one mile and the avenue of trees in your second. RC
