The adductors are a group of muscles in your inner thighs, made up of the magnus, the brevis and the longus. Magnus is the largest, most powerful and complex of the three. The adductors attach between the base of the hip bones and fan across the femur and down to its base. Because of where they connect, these muscles can affect a lot of functions that are part of your running stride, including flexing the leg, extending it and doing rotational movements of the hip.
Why do adductor strains happen? There are several reasons why you might be suffering from adductor pain or strain, the first of which, you won’t be surprised to learn, is lack of strength. The adductor is one of the most underrated muscles and as runners, we all need to focus on strengthening it regularly. Weak adductors can be the root cause of a plethora of injuries including knee pain, iliotibial band issues and lower back pain, so strengthening them is essential.
Weak or tight hip flexors can also increase your likelihood of an adductor strain. The adductors help with hip flexion, and if there is tension through the other muscles in the hip, your adductors will need to work harder. It's most likely to be the adductor magnus that is overworked in this case.
