Sustainability needs to be top of our list when it comes to choosing running gear. After all, there’s nothing more important than protecting our planet for future generations, is there? However, making greener choices can be difficult, particularly when it comes to sports gear, as historically the shoes and technical fabrics that go into creating apparel have contained material that isn’t, and can’t be, recycled. And more to the point, the choice simply hasn’t been there: to shop sustainably meant purchasing items that didn’t look the way we wanted, and – crucially – didn’t meet our budget constraints.
Decathlon is now looking to meet all of those concerns – and more. The company has a plan: its over-arching mission is to sustainably make the pleasure and benefits of sport accessible to as many people as possible, and they’ve taken that mission and are now leading the field in responsible retailing. Their goal is to reduce their direct and indirect carbon emissions by 2030, to capture carbon to offset residual emissions, and also to help minimise the emissions of others in the industry.
