Running turns us into superheroes. Returning flushed from a parkrun or getting back from a race with a medal around our neck is a guaranteed way to make us feel we have superpowers and can tackle anything life throws at us. But there’s another sport that’s pretty awesome in this regard too: bouldering. It’s an activity that transforms mere mortals into superheroes. And it can have a wealth of benefits for your running, too.
What is bouldering?
“Bouldering is gymnastic problem solving – think parkour meets gymnastics and you’re about there,” says Ben Levey, a bouldering coach at the Castle Climbing Centre in London (castle-climbing.co.uk). A sport that can be done indoors or out, it involves moving across rocks, boulders or climbing walls without using ropes or other equipment. “Bouldering is the purest form of climbing,” says Alex Messenger from the British Mountaineering Council (BMC). “It started as training for ‘real’ climbing, but once everyone realised how much fun it was, it exploded into a sport in its own right.”
