+ Our pelvis and torso balance upon our hips, and the hips act as the pivot point from which our legs propel us in running. The hip is the connection between the thigh and the pelvis. It is a ball and socket joint (femoral head and acetabulum, respectively) that is deepened and supported by a labrum and ligaments to attach the pelvis to the thigh. This provides loadbearing and shock absorption for the legs and proprioception to the thigh and the upper body. Numerous muscles act upon the hip joints to create multidirectional movements such as flexion (knee to chest), extension (taking the thigh behind you), abduction (taking the leg away from the midline of the body, adduction (bringing the leg across midline of the body) and internal and external rotation (often combined with the other movements such as crossing your legs).
