Do ice baths really help your body recover?
Professional athletes are fond of them, but some scientists say they’re a waste of time. So do ice baths or cold showers really help your body recover and repair after a race, long run or quality session?
Michael Fatica, lead consultant osteopath at the Mayfair Clinic, London, the may fair clinic.com
An ice cold bath or shower after a long run can help to flush out lactic acid, the waste product made in the muscles from exercise. Temporary exposure to cold constricts the blood vessels, then when the tissue warms, the blood flow is increased to cause the flushing effect and speed up the healing process. It also helps with small tears in the muscle fibres that naturally occur during exercise.
