Macronutrients sound like a buzzword: but they’re not! It’s just the name for all the things you’ve always eaten – but the key issue is this: what’s new is that we now know what proportion to eat them in to fuel our bodies efficiently. Gen up on your macros and the rest will come easily!
Protein
This group includes meat, poultry, fish, egg whites, dairy, beans, pulses, nuts, seeds, soy products, protein powders and mycoproteins such as Quorn.
Protein creates, maintains and repairs tissues inside the body. Our bodies already make non-essential amino acids, but we need to get our essential amino acids from external food sources such as meat, chicken and fish. Hence why these amino acids are called essential — because we don’t make them naturally.
