Mind matters
A network of runners around the UK are helping to remove the stigma from mental health bl@Words Juliet McGrattan
Running can be a secret weapon to help you through the ups and downs of daily life. Once you’ve personally experienced how much running benefits your mental health, it’s hard to keep it to yourself; it really is too good not to share. England Athletics are so keen to use running as a tool for good mental wellbeing that they have set up a Mental Health Champions scheme.
Talking therapy
The scheme is one part of England Athletics’ #RunAndTalk initiative, set up to use running to improve the mental health of people in England, supported by the mental health charity Mind. #RunAndTalk wants to remove the stigma of mental health and get people talking about their experiences. It aims to raise awareness and encourage people to improve their mental wellbeing through running. There are currently 491 Mental Health Champions in 211 running clubs and RunTogether groups in England.
While this is limited to England at the moment, elsewhere in the UK there are many groups dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging running as a positive mental health activity. Find out more at jogscotland.org.uk and https://irun.wales/.
