OMAN UTMB
The first UTMB in Oman was a challenge for every participant, including the intrepid Kerry Sutton
Oman by UTMB, a race of 134 kms with 7,800m elevation was dubbed ‘the beast’ and, as many ultras claim to be, the ‘world’s toughest ultra’. The fact that of the 326 who started, only 135 reached the finish in Al Hamra before the 44- hour cut off is testament to this. It’s certainly one of the toughest races any of our Women’s Running tribe have ever undertaken – and that’s saying something.
The original UTMB in the Alps, and from where this race has its origins, leads competitors over peaks and through valleys along welltrodden paths shaped by years of use. By contrast, Oman by UTMB runners traverse exposed ridges, run through ancient villages and ascend the 2,200m Jebel Al Akhdar “the Green Mountain”. The entire route is steeped in natural beauty.
At 7.30pm, the starting shoot on the normally quiet streets of Nizwa was a lively, noisy and exciting place. Runners checked their kit, spectators snapped photos and groups of male dancers brandished swords and drums, adding local flair to the spectacle.
