QI’m a beginner – what books should I read?
A I highly recommend The Beginning Runner’s Handbook (Greystone Books) by Ian MacNeill, and Marathoning For Mortals (Rodale Press) by John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield. MacNeill’s book has a detailed 13-week plan aimed at helping beginners to extend the distances they run while staying injury fee. It also provides tips for maintaining motivation and running while on holiday, and gives sound nutritional advice. Marathoning for Mortals explains how beginner-level runners can make running a part of their lives in a down-to-earth way. It covers topics such as how to start and maintain a new running programme, how to improve your speed and endurance, and what you should eat and drink while training. DM
