There was much anticipation in the freezing cold air as runners flocked to Callendar Park for Tough Runner UK’s first ever Scotland event: the Falkirk Epic Trail Run. 2,500 runners had signed up for the event on January 19th, and with so many registered for this sold-out 10K run, each person paying around £23 for their entry, I expected race registration to go smoothly. Far from it. Luckily, I arrived 90 minutes before the event was due to start because I was in the queue to register for over 30 minutes!
Weather conditions proved favourable: it was clear but cold, with occasional spells of sunshine. After a toilet stop my shivering body alerted me to get moving; I had to warm up to try and shake off the tingling in my toes, the ache in my fingertips. Shortly before the race was due to start, we were informed that there was a delay – hundreds still stood waiting to register. More running around, more high-knees and airpunching to try and get warm.
