Dee is a Couch to 5K Run Ambassador for RMR and loves taking part in the Cheer Squads
I was your typical kid; I hated running at school and found any way I could to avoid it. When I was 30, I was unwell, in pain and losing weight. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and right then I decided I needed to do something to help. I wanted to be healthy and reduce my risk of flare-ups, and people always talked about running being free, so I thought I’d give it a go.
Time out for surgery
One day I was on Facebook and a suggestion popped up for Run Mummy Run. At first I was hesitant to join, because I’m not a mum. However, I quickly realised you don’t have to be a mum to be part of this community; it’s all about women supporting other women. I found lots of wonderful local running friends through RMR and now we love meeting up for runs and catch-ups together. If I’m struggling with motivation, we help each other by messaging or arranging to meet up for a run, or even a walk.
When my Crohn’s meant I needed surgery, my RMR friends were amazing. They all came to support me on my last parkrun, and when I was ready to get back to running, they were there to head out with me or support me. While I was in the hospital, people checked in, came to see me and sent me cards and get-well gifts.
