ISSUE 135 || MARCH 2021
March 8th is International Women’s Day. A day for us to celebrate achievement, strength and courage, both within our running community and across humanity as a whole. We’re in the glorious position of celebrating women on every page of this magazine, but we wanted to go one better and highlight some of the women who inspired us to run in the first place, who continue to inspire us to strive for longer distances, and to appreciate the power in our legs and the joy in our hearts. Turn to page 30 to revel in their magnificence.
But International Women’s Day is also a time for reflection. We know that the pandemic has been challenging for most of us, but also that there are women and children out there who have, as a result of lockdown, been plunged into dangerous, and often life-threatening situations. We’ve partnered with Women’s Aid to raise awareness and funds to support women and children experiencing domestic abuse.
The need for specialist domestic abuse services has never been more critical: one in 10 survivors have said their abuser had actively used lockdown restrictions to stop them from leaving, while a fifth said they had tried to leave during the pandemic but had been unable to find housing.
