Your heart is a muscle, and the more you train it, the better it gets. A heart with increased stroke volume (the amount of blood it can push out in a single beat/ventricular contraction) is more efficient at supplying blood to match exercise intensity needs. The thing is, stroke volume is tricky to measure. Fortunately, heart rate is easy to measure and gives a good representation of these contractions, making it a great measure for productivity and fitness.
Understanding your heart rate can help you define and monitor your progress and performance. Training promotes an increase in stroke volume, more powerful contractions and so lower heart rate during exercise and at rest. Heart rate can be a useful metric to help you see improvement.
