Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional gastrointestinal condition, thought to affect between 10- 15 per cent of the world’s population. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) defines IBS as, “A chronic relapsing and often life-long disorder, characterised by the presence of abdominal pain or discomfort, which may be associated with defecation and/or accompanied by a change in bowel habit.”
Sex hormones play a key role in IBS and consequently it affects women around twice as often as it does men. Symptoms tend to become most exacerbated when women are between the ages of 20 and 30 and many women find that their IBS symptoms are worse around their period.
