COUCH TO 10K PLANS
Nail a first 10K or bag a PB at the distance - then use that fitness to tackle a half marathon
Words: Laura Fountain
Once you’ve got that 10K fitness, why not push a little bit further?
The 10K distance is a great challenge in itself. But a summer of focussing on building speed at 10K can set you up for a strong autumn of longer distance races. So whether you’ve got your eyes on a half or full marathon later in the year, or just fancy dedicating yourself to a summer of speed, these plans will certainly help.
It’s a common misconception that the longer the race, the harder it is. Because, the shorter the race, the faster (ie. harder) it is. Difficulty is relative and there’s nothing easy about pushing yourself to run your best, whatever the distance.
If you’ve ever watched athletics championships, you’ll know that 10K is the longest race on a running track. For us amateur athletes, our racing will be done in a park or on roads, but the fact elites competein a stadium shows how the 10K distance straddles that line between speed and endurance.
