ANKLE ‘EXOSKELETON’ AIDS RUNNERS
Researchers have discovered that a motorised device that attaches around the ankle and foot can drastically reduce the energy cost of running. Engineers at Stamford University investigated the benefits of motor-powered and springbased assistance. Wearing a device strapped to your legs, powered by a motor, reduced the energy cost of running by 15 per cent, in contrast to springlike assistance, which made it harder to run. Speed may be boosted by as much as 10 per cent using a powered exoskeleton - although obviously these contraptions aren’t currently legal for races.
