Adventurous weekends
We’re not going to dress it up. Life in the last couple of years has been full of unexpected and unwanted challenges.
Good for: Solos, couples, groups of friends and families
Very few of us will be totally unscarred by the experience, and many of us are more cautious about our future plans.
What to expect: Anything from city breaks and relaxed festival vibes, to longer runs and harder challenges; whatever the adventure, most of them with a cold beer or two and an early night
But the fact is that all of us could do with a break. It’s been a long time coming – in fact, it’s been years since we’ve been able to include a feature in this magazine on running holidays, and it’s utterly joyous to be able to do so now. Our world has shifted a little, but our ability to explore it has now been – fingers crossed – restored! Because a holiday that enables us to take our running with us is a truly wonderful thing, and we all deserve the happiness, freedom, sunshine and adventure that that entails.
How it will benefit your running: Trying new challenges will test your fitness, mix up your training and provide greater rewards. Stunning scenery will keep you engaged so you’re never bored Cost: Range depending on event and distance to travel, from £50 to £500
Running is one of the best ways to explore a new place, whether that’s a wake-up jog every morning before the sun rises, or a big city marathon on ancient cobblestones. Some of us like to go solo, some of us can’t bear to be without our running pals, others take the family and many will only do it with their furry friend. However you like to experience your runcation, we have some simple, pocket-friendly suggestions, with a few glamourous, once-in-a-lifetime destinations to tempt you as well. As one of the greatest philosophers of our time has said: “You can turn this world around and bring back all of those happy days. Put your troubles down, it’s time to celebrate.” And when Madge speaks, we must all follow. Let’s go!
All runners tend to follow a certain stepping stone progression, albeit at their own pace and in their own time. Never believing you could run a 5K leads to your first 10K, then half marathon and for many, the golden 26.2 distance. What comes next though? Often an ultra, a multi-day event or a big city race provides a step-up challenge.
Running retreats
Good for: Solos, couples, groups of friends and families What to expect: Guided runs, wholesome food, stunning sunsets, hours of relaxation How it will benefit your running: Most retreats fill each day with multiple activities, and include workshops to boost your running knowledge Booking: wildcoastescapes.co.ukCost: £795 for three nights per person based on sharing a twin or double
If you like a bit of structure to your breaks, a running retreat will restore your love for running, as well as boost your motivation. Kate Sellers spent a few days with Wild Coast Escapes (wildcoastescapes.co.uk), running and swimming along the rugged Devon coastline and she loved the mix of activities.
“Even though you may be worried about going on a running retreat, and wonder whether you may be too slow, once you’re there you’ll realise your hosts will cater for all abilities,” says Kate. “Ronnie and Ceri, who run Wild Coast Escapes, want everyone to feel welcome and included. They adjust and adapt the schedule to give you options that suit, and split you into groups dependent on ability.”
