Valentyna Veretska, a war refugee who recently fled Ukraine and took refuge in Israel, has won the Jerusalem Marathon. In a spectacular win, Veretska took the women’s title in 2:45:54, celebrating at the end of the tough course by flying both the Ukrainian and Israeli flags.Veretska, 31 years old, fled Ukraine with her 11-year-old daughter after Russia’s invasion, leaving her husband behind. She then travelled through Poland to Israel to take part in the marathon. The course is one of the most challenging events in the world marathon calendar with 2,000ft of ascent over the 26.2 miles.
