After hundreds of kilometres of trail running, thousands of metres of elevation trekked up and hours of spending time on feet, especially checking out the actual route, the 7 Valleys Ultra race was one that was just as tough as it looks.
On 30 September 2023, the inaugural event took place in the Lake District. Hundreds of runners set off early in the morning from Waterhead, on a 110K journey up and over some of the toughest climbs the area has to offer, and through some of the most stunning valleys in the UK, as they made their way to the finish line in Keswick.
As the name suggests, you head through seven valleys in total, with almost 4,000m elevation gain. The terrain underfoot is tough and technical and with weeks of rain beforehand, the trails were soaked with running water from the get-go. We were treated to a dry start to the morning, and with a 6am go-time, we set off in the dark, but soon ran into the sunrise. The dry conditions weren’t to last. Once we left the comfort of Sticklebarn at the first aid station came the first climb up Rossett Gill. The ground underfoot was sodden and any hope of keeping your feet dry through the race were lost.
