I’ve always run but it used to be a bit spurof-the-moment – I’d sign up to things and not train – but then in 2016, I separated from my husband, and basically ended up sofa-surfing with friends and not having a job and I found running helped me get through that time.”
In fact, Sinead really got the running bug and in the last few years has worked her way through the distances and even done two marathons. She says: “I always fundraise for Mind because of my own experiences with my mental health, but also because of my mum. She’s schizophrenic so I’ve grown up around that environment and the fundraising mindset has always been important to me.”
Sinead heard about GoodGym in 2018 but didn’t actually join until 2020. “Because of my mental health, I had quite high anxiety. It was during the lockdown and the gyms weren’t open so GoodGym was a way of getting out there and doing things.
“Everyone was really friendly and chatty. I guess, because of its community ethos, members tend to have a similar sort of outlook. Everyone is there because they care and that makes it easier to talk to people you don’t know.”
