Tash Acres, founder of Earth Runs Active for Earth (earthruns.com), has spent the last three years trying to make her runs as sustainable as possible. “I love running in nature, whether it’s a glorious trail run or being out on the wildest beach,” she says. “It’s in these moments that I feel most alive. However, it hasn’t escaped me that Mother Nature isn’t happy. We can’t go a day without the mention of climate change, rising water levels, or crazy weather around the world. There’s no escaping that she needs us to think about her in everything we do, including how we run.”
• Think travel
Tash believes in simple changes. “Firstly, think travel,” she says. “By far the most significant negative impact we runners can have is travelling to far-flung races.”
Research shows that flying contributes 83% to the total carbon footprint of training and participating in a marathon. And it’s not just long-distance travel; driving can have a huge impact too. “If you want to race, opt for local races or ones you can get to by train or, at the very least, car share. If it’s the big race you’ve always wanted to do, do fewer and save up to fly direct so you use less carbon (take-off and landing are when most emissions are produced).”
