New running kit is an undeniable thrill. Boxfresh trainers are bouncy and responsive, pristine leggings don’t sag, and you just can’t beat a new tee that does not – yet – make you smell like a bin after two miles. But all this buying does, of course, come at a cost.
The UK sportswear market is worth £13.8 billion. That’s a lot of money going on new gear – especially when lots of people are struggling with the cost of living. The vast amounts of carbon and water used to make running gear has led Green Runners, the running community that puts the planet first, to make kitting-up one of its pillars for change. Members can pledge to question every new purchase – and to check whether they already own something that serves the same purpose before buying new.
Don’t fall into the trap of having ‘all the gear, no idea’
Look further into your cupboards, wardrobe and the kitchen drawer and you might find running gear you didn’t know you owned
In the interests of both cash and the planet, it’s always worth shopping your existing running stash. If you haven’t worn a finisher’s tee to yoga, you’re missing an opportunity to flex. But that’s not where it ends. Look further into your cupboards, wardrobe and the kitchen drawer and you might just find some running gear you didn’t know you owned. Put a few of these unlikely heroes into action to support your running and you’ll be able to save up for – and savour – the kit you DO need to buy. Because the people who say that all you need to run is a pair of trainers have never owned a pair of boobs – and a good running bra is an absolute necessity.
REAL FOOD
With supplements, protein bars and energy gels all over socials and lining supermarket shelves, it’s easy to get the impression that packaged sports nutrition is an essential, rather than a nice-to-have. Although we wouldn’t want to run in a world without options, if you’re looking to limit packaging and keep hold of cash, real food is often the answer either for onthe-run fuel or recovery afterwards.
