”I’d be standing in the kitchen, dressed and ready for a run, and I’d get to the front door and I couldn’t physically get myself to leave the house”
As a child I really wasn’t sporty. I used to forge notes to get out of PE lessons, and I hated exercise. As an adult, not much changed: I just did the bare minimum. You know the kind of thing; I’d join a gym in January and never go again for the rest of the year!
My husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, was the total opposite to me. He was training for a half marathon and I said how much I’d love to do one at some point. He responded with: “You’d never be able to do a half marathon!” I fell for his reverse psychology hook, line and sinker.
He took me on my first training run and, having not run since school, I set off like it was a sprint, with him running to keep up with me. It was a mere 10 seconds later when everything seized up and it was just horrible! However, I persevered and trained for the half. I wouldn’t say I enjoyed it on the day as I hadn’t trained properly, but I began to recognise the benefits of proper exercise in my life.
